In the February issue we focus on Attitude. But first, here at the Academy, we would like to tip our mask to a local legend.  Chris Abbott passed away suddenly earlier this week.  He was only 51.

Why is attitude so important for goaltenders?  Can you improve your attitude?

4 things you can do to improve your attitude:

  • Listen to your internal dialogue. When faced with a negative thought, turn it around to make it into a positive thought. (For example, “I should have made that save.  I am no good!” could be changed to, “It's just one goal.  I tried my hardest. I am skilled.”)

  • Interact within positive environments and with positive people. Do things with people who reinforce you in a positive way. Go places that have special meanings and positive memories or associations.

  • Volunteer. Do something that will help others. This will give you a sense of fulfillment and make you feel happy inside.

  • Get pleasure out of the simple things in life. Laughter is one of the most powerful mood enhancers. Allow yourself to laugh.
