The Illusion of Accountability in Education

Compliance is not learning, no matter how neatly we package it.

Ontario is moving to tie high school grades to attendance. Should Newfoundland and Labrador follow?
A VOCM poll suggests 74% of respondents say yes. On the surface, it sounds like accountability. In reality, it risks mistaking compliance for learning.
The harder question is the one we keep avoiding: why are students not showing up in the first place?
This isn’t a motivation problem. It’s a relevance problem.
Students are living in a world where AI can tutor, explain, write, and adapt in real time. They carry more computational power in their pockets than entire institutions once had. Yet we still ask them to sit inside a system that, in many ways, has barely changed in decades.
So we tighten rules. We link grades to attendance. We try to engineer presence. But forced attendance doesn’t create engagement. It just produces compliance.
And here’s the uncomfortable symmetry: if we believe student attendance and performance should be tightly controlled through consequences, then we should apply the same logic across the system. Tie teacher and leadership compensation to student attendance, engagement, and outcomes. Make it all measurable. Standardize the incentives. Enforce accountability in both directions.
But the moment you apply that logic evenly, it starts to reveal its flaw.
Because one form of compliance is not more enlightened than another. It’s the same instinct wearing different uniforms. Control students through grades. Control educators through pay.
Neither approach fixes the underlying issue.
What gets lost in all of this is the actual work of education: relevance, meaning, and identity formation. Students don’t need tighter compliance structures. They need reasons to show up. And teachers don’t need more pressure mechanisms, they need space to build learning that actually connects to the world students are living in.
Attendance is not the problem. It’s the signal. And right now, the system is responding to the signal instead of fixing the cause.
